Watchhouse Hill rises above the village of Pill. The orchard was once part of Ham Green Hospital.
Now both hill and orchard are public open space. The River Avon Trail (National Cycle Route 41) runs along one side the hill. The orchard is a pleasant place for a rest. It’s looked after by the community. No one will mind if you take a couple of apples but they will if you leave any litter – so don’t!
Much used but rarely visited – what a shame. The Avon motorway bridge is one of those great, but barely noticed, monuments of the age of oil. If you’ve travelled the M5 in the past few years you may have also seen the 1000s of new cars waiting to get onto the UK road system at the Portbury Docks.
Download the guide and treasure trail, follow the clues and get yourself a souvenir before it’s too late. Or you can find your way via geocaching.
